1. "She was young, with fair skin, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky." This quote is one of the most descriptive quotes of Josephine. This is importatn because it allows the audience to visualize her.
2. "The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright." This is a visual of the change in Josephines personailty. At first she was very despressed and sad and now she has become very excited.
3."There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself." This quote makes you feel sympathy towards her as well as hope for her. She seems so beaten down and the fact that she now believes this, makes you feel that yes there is hope in her life! She can live for herself! It also makes you think that maybe she was abused and now it has finally ended.
4. "It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long." This adds on to the previous quote. She thought that she would have to endure the pain she was use to, and now that may jus end. You feel happy for her and the tone and mood of the story hightens.
5. "There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory." This is a visual to the statements previously made. You are provided with a picture of how she has changed from the stare to triumphant eyes. This truly lifts the spirits of the story.
1. Was she abused?
2.Was that why she was so happy that he just might be gone? Or was she just really sad?
3. Was she sad because he came back or because she thought he was dead?
4. Was the heart problem planned or was it just a cover?
5. Did the people really know if she suffered from a heart problem or was it just a cover up.
6. Why don't we know exactly why she was so happy that he was dead?
7. Shouldn't she be sad that her husband may be dead and that she may never see him again?
8. Where exactly are they? What's the other setting?
